Brick and Concrete House
Brick and Concrete House
This residence is a sustainable intervention that explores the interplay of materials and textures in different forms and scales. Exposed brick and concrete are the main materials that create a striking contrast in the design. The residence has received a Platinum rating from IGBC for its environmental excellence.
The residence is composed of two rectangular volumes that enclose a double-height courtyard in the middle. This courtyard is a vital element that brings light, air and is facilitate movements within the residence.
The courtyard is animated by skylights, pergolas, and perforations that generate changing patterns of light and shadow in the interior spaces. These openings also limit heat gain and calibrate the light quality and direction to suit the needs of each room. The residence is expected to use less electricity than conventional residences in the same gated community where it is located.
The residence also incorporates locally sourced materials with 30% recycled content, methods that reduce water consumption, and a landscape that adapts to the climate. These features support the passive energy-saving methods of the residence and make it eligible for the Platinum rating from IGBC, which is a first for a sub-2500 sqft house under ‘Individual Dwelling’ in Gujarat.
