a small BIG house

a small BIG house

Located within a gated community in the dense urban fabric of Ahmedabad, this house is designed for a couple, their school-going son, aging parents, and a dog. Deeply rooted in the neighborhood due to years of living there, the clients wished to upgrade their lifestyle by building a contemporary home on their existing modest-sized plot without leaving the locality. Designed during the Covid-19 pandemic, the house prioritizes a strong connection to nature, openness, and social spaces, embodying the idea of achieving more with less.

compact yet spacious

The compact plot necessitated a thoughtful approach to space optimization and negotiation. Peripheral push-and-pull dynamics replaced uniform setbacks, creating landscaped pockets of varying sizes. These pockets seamlessly connect indoor spaces to the outdoors, allowing abundant natural light and ventilation to permeate the home. The design intelligently expands where needed and contracts where possible, resulting in a compact yet contemporary house with generously proportioned rooms.

Courtyard as vital organ

The house comprises two rectangular concrete blocks flanking an exposed brick block, with the latter acting as the heart of the design. The brick block features perforated walls on its smaller sides and houses a 2.5-story-high landscaped courtyard and staircase. This central courtyard serves as a vital interior space, providing natural light, ventilation, and vertical connectivity across all floors. Additionally, it links the living areas on either side through a bridge, acting as a "lung" for the house by enhancing airflow and vitality.

Climate Responsive Architecture

Strategically placed openings and setbacks maximize natural light and ventilation, while the central courtyard enables night cooling. This thoughtful design reduces stored heat and cooling loads during Ahmedabad’s hot summers, ensuring a comfortable and sustainable living environment.

Two types of exposed concrete finish - fair finish and wood finish along with exposed brick wall and textured finishes are used throughout the house. The front block is made of wood finish concrete while the back block is made of regular plastered brick wall with textured plaster to keep a check on the budget. The front block is two storey high while the back block is three. Lower landscaped terrace on the second floor to be used for family gatherings in favorable weather conditions. The upper terrace is dedicated to solar panels and other services.

Seamless  Connection

The interplay of materials blurs the boundary between exterior and interior spaces. Exposed brick (walls and perforated screens), exposed concrete (ply and wood finish), teak wood, and Italian marble form the material palette. The use of single marble flooring and teak wood ceilings throughout the house creates a seamless and expansive feel. The design ensures that not all spaces are immediately visible, fostering a sense of discovery as one moves through the house. The constant proximity to landscaped pockets further enhances the living experience.
