A house for three generations

A house for a multigenerational joint family warrants a cautious and balanced approach because of varied and often contradicting requirements from all family members. The greatest challenge lies in shaping private domains for each sub-family while also creating shared spaces that foster connection.

At the heart of 3S House is the idea of a “house within a house”—a framework that unites three generations under one roof, while offering each the privacy, autonomy, and sense of belonging they need.

Living with landscape

Anchored at the rear of the plot, the house opens towards a northeast-facing garden that becomes both a visual anchor and a social stage.

Interior spaces extend into this green expanse, making it part of everyday life—from quiet morning routines to large family gatherings. The garden amplifies the home’s openness, weaving landscape into the architecture’s core.

The 3S House opens up to a lush, northeast-facing garden, providing a central visual anchor and a tranquil social space that extends the home's living areas into nature.

The "Stacking, Shifting, Sliding" design strategy of the 3S House creates dynamic terraces and shaded verandas, perfect for daily family life.

Spatial Strategy: 3S (Stacking, Shifting, Sliding)

The home is organized as a series of stacked blocks, each tied to different age groups and activities. These volumes are gently shifted to create terraces, balconies, and shaded porches—informal in-between spaces where daily life spills out.

More than transitions, these thresholds enrich the experience of the home, offering moments of pause, connection, and openness to nature.

Terraces and balconies created by the home’s sliding volumes offer informal, shaded in-between spaces that enrich the daily experience and foster connection with the outdoors.

Overall design of the 3S House weaves together privacy, togetherness, and landscape to create a home that grows with the family over time.

Material palette

The architecture speaks through a restrained material vocabulary: wood-finished concrete, white oak, and marble floors form a consistent, tactile backdrop. Subtle transitions between materials ensure a quiet cohesion, where inside and outside, intimate and collective, feel part of the same whole.

An open-concept living space in the 3S House, showcasing a serene material palette of white oak, marble floors, and wood-finished concrete for a seamless blend of natural textures.

3S House is imagined not only as a dwelling, but as a place of continuity. It responds to routine as well as celebration, and to individual needs as much as collective belonging. By weaving together privacy, togetherness, and landscape, the design creates a home that grows with the family—and carries their life forward across time.

At Unseen Architects, we believe that great architecture happens when great patrons support it. As Edwin Lutyens said, “There will never be great architects or great architecture without great patrons.” Your trust and vision help us turn bold ideas into reality. We’re always looking for clients who appreciate our work and want to make a difference—no matter the size or type of project. Together, we can create meaningful spaces that transform the built environment.
